Discovery Research for Product Opportunities

@ Inspirame

This is a foundational and discovery research project I led at Inspirame. The high level objective of the study was to revisit a product opportunity and uncover user needs. Some information is removed or modified due to confidentiality.

This project had the most significant impact, securing $50k in funding by providing insights that directly informed actions to address key opportunities.

Background and Goals

The product manager wanted to conduct preliminary research on our users to determine what opportunities could we offer with our product. Some key goals we have:

Discovery Research Goals

  1. Understand the gaps in the current market and discover areas where users face challenges that the product could address.
  2. Investigate why users engage with certain products or services, and what drives their decisions and actions.

Foundational Research Goals

  1. Develop detailed personas based on user behaviors, demographics, and motivations to inform the design and product strategy.
  2. Map out typical user flows and interaction patterns to identify key touchpoints, challenges, and opportunities for improving the user experience.
  3. Derive design guidelines and principles that align with the users' needs, behaviors, and expectations, ensuring that the product is intuitive and user-friendly.

Methods

To achieve these goals, I performed market research on educational needs, which revealed that institutions rely heavily on data to improve their outreach and marketing campaigns and focus their efforts on areas with the highest return. From this, I then conducted a UX audit on the current platform, revealing issues and opportunities for improvements. Additionally, I conducted 4 in-depth interviews with our current industry partners, which gave detailed feedback on the current platforms and identified key opportunities.

Crucial Insights

The most significant insight from the research was that users found the platform overly simplistic, lacking the necessary customization options to meet their specific needs. While the interface was easy to navigate, the limited functionality frustrated users trying to perform more complex tasks, hindering their ability to work efficiently.

User interviews revealed that the absence of advanced filtering and sorting options made it difficult for users to find and organize the data they needed. They expressed a need for more robust tools that would allow them to manipulate data without resorting to external solutions, which slowed down their workflow.

Additionally, the platform's rigid design restricted users from tailoring their dashboards to fit their specific workflows. Many users relied on manual workarounds to get the data views they required, indicating that the current interface failed to accommodate their needs for flexibility and efficiency.

Ultimately, the current design, while simple, lacked the depth needed to support users’ diverse tasks. Without more advanced customization features, the platform risks alienating users who require greater control over their data to perform their jobs effectively.
